Organbuilding on the Erie
and Chenango Canals
by Stephen Pinel
The OHS Press is proud to announce the first of its Monographs in American Organ History: Organbuilding Along the Erie and Chenango Canals, written by Stephen Pinel, archivist of the Organ Historical Society’s American Organ Archives. During an era of unprecedented expansion in the arts, culture, invention, manufacture, finance, and transportation, Alvinza Andrews (1799–1862) was the most significant builder of new organs in the Upstate New York region. The company, continued by his son, George, produced about 300 organs over a 67-year period. Their firm was the foundation of an entire school of organbuilding in Oneida County—a group of manufacturers that ultimately produced some 1,200 new and rebuilt instruments.
A 300-page work of prodigious scholarship and accomplished style, Organbuilding Along the Erie and Chenango Canals is profusely illustrated with over 50 period photographs. Seven appendixes include documentation of Andrews organs, stoplists, and the first complete catalog of organs built by the company.
Subscriptions to Organbuilding Along the Erie and Chenango Canals: Alvinza and George N. Andrews of Utica, New York begin at $50 for which the name of the donor will be printed in the LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS in the front of the volume. Please consider adding your name to the list in this landmark publication on American organbuilding. |
